but可以连接两个并列成分或两个并列分句，意为“但是，然而”。但在使用时要注意:but不能与though/although连用。
从属连词whereas也可以引出表示对比、对立或直接相反的状语从句，是三个连词中最正式用法，语气强并且书卷气较重，通常多位于居中，也可置于句首。
