介词在英语中虽是一种虚词，但起着极其重要的作用。在每篇英语文章里都可找到大量的介词。语言学家称：“英语是介词语言。”(English is a language of preposition．)正确地使用英语介词可使语言更生动、更简练。有许多从句用介词短语替代更为简洁明了。

1.表示所有关系和与之相关的其他概念
He is a friend of mine．他是我的朋友。
That’s the house of the Browns．那是布朗家的房子。
当属格和带“of”的修饰语都可用时，使用后者能突出“of”后所接名词的意思。如：John Smith’s wife约翰·史密斯的妻子，突出了“wife”的身份。the wife of John Smith则突出了丈夫“John Smith”的名字。
2.表示部分关系
Three of them are teachers．他们中有三人是教师。
Most of us are soldiers．我们中大多数是士兵。
